Basilan hands Bicol rude welcome in MPBL debut

Basilan Steel gave a rude welcome to Bicol Volcanoes in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Wednesday, June 12 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Steel spoiled the MPBL debut of the Volcanoes with new players making a timely baskets in a 94-83 victory.

Basilan led by as many as 16 points, but Bicol rallied and made a comeback effort in the fourth quarter make it 75-73 following a layup by Alwin Alday.

However, Jay Collado, Gab Daganon and Hesed Gabo made a 7-0 run to protect their lead on their way to their first victory in Season 3 of MPBL.

Collado had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Dagangon added 15 points, six rebounds and two assists. Gabo added 13 markers and five assists for the Steel.

Cris Dumapig, the best player of the game, recorded a double-double of his own, with 13 points and 10 rebounds on top of five assists.


Alday led the Bicol with 23 points, five rebounds and two assists. Alexander Nuyles contributed 22 points and seven rebounds, while Ron Jason Buenafe tallied 15 points, 11 boards and 5 assists in the loss.
