Barangay Ginebra prevails over Magnolia Hotshots

The highly anticipated Manila Clasico lived up to its billing on Easter Sunday, as Barangay Ginebra edged out Magnolia Hotshots, 87-77, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. This victory propels the Gin Kings back onto the winning track in the 2024 PBA Philippine Cup.

Determined to shake off their pre-break loss to Meralco, Ginebra displayed a renewed focus. Their starting lineup, featuring Mav Ahanmisi, Jamie Malonzo, Stanley Pringle, Japeth Aguilar, and Christian Standhardinger, shouldered the offensive load, all contributing double-digit scoring efforts.

A pivotal eight-minute stretch bridging the third and fourth quarters proved to be the turning point. Coach Tim Cone's Ginebra squad outscored Magnolia 19-5, establishing a comfortable 66-58 lead. This cushion proved insurmountable for the Hotshots, propelling Ginebra to a crucial bounce-back victory and a 3-1 win-loss record.

This win marks a significant achievement for Ginebra. Not only did they secure a much-needed victory, but it also marks their 100th overall win in the storied Manila Clasico rivalry, a testament to the enduring intensity of this matchup.

Japeth Aguilar, filling the void left by the absent Scottie Thompson, spearheaded Ginebra's attack. He finished with a well-rounded performance of 16 points and 9 rebounds. Stanley Pringle provided additional firepower with 17 points, including three crucial three-pointers. The rest of the starting lineup – Ahanmisi (16 points), Malonzo (11 points), and Standhardinger (11 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists) – chipped in valuable contributions.

Despite trailing by only four points (56-60) entering the final quarter, the Hotshots were unable to keep pace with Ginebra's surge. A late three-pointer by Jackson Corpuz offered a glimmer of hope, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Gin Kings' relentless offense.

Ian Sangalang emerged as Magnolia's top scorer with 17 points off the bench. Jio Jalalon followed suit with a double-double of 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists. However, their efforts were ultimately overshadowed by Ginebra's collective effort.

With this victory, Barangay Ginebra climbs to a 3-1 record, tied with the NorthPort Batang Pier atop the team standings. Magnolia, on the other hand, suffers their first loss of the season and falls to 1-1. Both teams will undoubtedly look to regroup and strategize for their upcoming matchups as the PBA Philippine Cup continues to unfold.

This Manila Clasico showdown showcased the grit and determination of both teams. Barangay Ginebra's second-half surge and balanced scoring attack ultimately proved to be the difference, while Magnolia will aim to learn from this loss and bounce back stronger in their future games.
