Gilas Women gets breakthrough win in FIBA Asia Cup

Gilas Pilipinas Women earned their first win in the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup Division A, defeating Chinese Taipei 92-81 on Wednesday at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre in Australia.


The Philippines women's national basketball team broke through for their first-ever win in the group phase of the FIBA Women's Asia Cup since the tournament was split into two divisions in 2015. The Philippines also achieved their first win against Chinese-Taipei in three tries.

With their historic victory over Chinese Taipei, Gilas Pilipinas Women have secured their place in the FIBA Asia Cup Division A and will not have to play in the relegation match. They will now advance to the playoff round for a chance to compete in the semifinals.

Vanessa de Jesus, a Filipino-American point guard, led the Philippines to victory with a game-high 25 points, four assists, and two rebounds.

Jack Animam had a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds, shooting a perfect 8-of-8 from the field. Afril Bernardino also had a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, along with 3 steals, 3 assists, and a block.

Janine Pontejos added nine points, while Ella Fajardo tallied in six points for the Philippines.

Lin Yuting led Chinese Taipei with 21 points in the loss, which will send them to the relegation match against Lebanon.
