The Philippine Women’s National Football Team (PWNFT) put up a brave defense in their FIFA Women’s World Cup debut, but Switzerland’s strong attack proved too much for them to handle.

Ranked 20th in the FIFA world rankings, La Nati secured a 2-0 victory over the debutant Filipinas.

Katrina Guillou came close to a dream debut in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, finding the back of the net for the Filipinas in the 16th minute. Unfortunately, the goal was ruled out due to an offside call.

Ramona Bachmann gave Switzerland the lead in the 45th minute, converting a penalty after the referee made the key penalty call against the Philippines in the waning moments of the first half. Seraina Piubel added a second goal in the 64th minute, following goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel's earlier denial of Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic and Coumba Sow.

Switzerland's win has made them tied for first place in Group A with New Zealand, giving them a better chance of reaching the next round.

On Tuesday, July 25, Switzerland will take on Norway in Hamilton, while the Philippines will be facing a New Zealand in Wellington.
