In a thrilling season opener of the NCAA Season 99 men's basketball tournament, the Mapua Cardinals, led by the veteran presence of Warren Bonifacio, showcased their poise under pressure, securing an 80-70 victory over the San Sebastian Golden Stags.
Bonifacio, a seasoned campaigner, proved to be the catalyst for Mapua's success in their first game of the season. He displayed remarkable composure under pressure, contributing 16 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and an assist.
Bonifacio received valuable support from his teammates, with JC Recto and Clint Escamis contributing 15 and 12 points, respectively. Their combined efforts on both ends of the court helped Mapua overcome a challenging early deficit and take control of the game.
The Golden Stags, with Alex Desoyo leading the way, started strong and had a comfortable 23-12 lead in the second quarter. But in the third quarter, the Cardinals made a strong comeback, scoring 18 points compared to San Sebastian's 9, and increased their lead to a commanding 72-54.
San Sebastian tried to catch up late in the game, reducing the difference to seven points at 70-77 with a layup from Raymart Escubido and only 37 seconds left. But then, Warren Bonifacio sealed Mapua's victory by making an important three-pointer in the last 20 seconds, preventing any chance of a comeback.
Rafael Are led San Sebastian with 18 points, showing off his scoring ability. Despite the loss, the Golden Stags showed resilience and fighting spirit, hinting at an exciting season ahead.
