Tim Cone to lead Gilas Pilipinas at 2023 Asian Games

Tim Cone, the winningest coach in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading Gilas Pilipinas in their quest for glory at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

The appointment of Tim Cone as the head coach was unveiled during a press conference held at the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City, by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), under the leadership of President Al Panlilio.

This decision comes after an emergency meeting convened between key figures in Philippine basketball, including PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial, league Chairman Ricky Vargas, and San Miguel Corp. Sports Director Alfrancis Chua, reflecting the gravity and significance of the move.

Alfrancis Chua, a prominent figure in Philippine sports, will take on the role of team manager for Gilas Pilipinas, with PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial serving as deputy manager. This formidable leadership team aims to guide the national squad to a successful campaign in the upcoming Asian Games.

Cone's appointment comes as a replacement for Chot Reyes, who voluntarily stepped aside following intense criticism from local basketball enthusiasts regarding the team's performance at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

This will not be Tim Cone's first stint as the head coach of Gilas Pilipinas, as he previously led the squad to a gold medal victory in the 30th Southeast Asian Games held in Manila in 2019. His extensive experience and remarkable coaching acumen make him a natural choice to steer the team towards excellence.

Tim Cone's storied coaching career in the PBA includes an astounding 25 championships, cementing his status as one of the most successful mentors in Philippine basketball history. He also holds the distinction of coaching the legendary "Centennial Team," which secured a bronze medal at the 1998 Asian Games.

Joining Tim Cone in his coaching staff are Richard del Rosario, Ginebra guard LA Tenorio, and longtime Gilas deputy coaches Josh Reyes and Jong Uichico.

The 2023 Asian Games, a multi-sport event, will run from September 23 to October 8 in Hangzhou, China.
