La Salle outlasts UP in thrilling UAAP women's volleyball showdown

The De La Salle University Lady Spikers displayed resilience to overcome a determined University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons squad, winning a tightly contested match (26-24, 25-20, 24-26, 27-25) in the UAAP Season 86 Women's Volleyball Tournament on Thursday, April 4, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

This victory not only extends La Salle's winning streak to six games but also guarantees them at least a playoff berth for the coveted Final Four spot.

The Lady Spikers faced adversity right from the start, playing without their reigning MVP, Angel Canino, who arrived at the venue with an arm injury. Despite the absence of their key offensive weapon, La Salle remained composed and fought valiantly throughout the match.

In Canino's absence, Shevana Laput stepped up as the team's offensive leader, registering a game-high 21 points, primarily through 18 powerful attacks. Alleiah Malaluan provided valuable support, contributing 17 points to the winning effort.

The Fighting Maroons displayed commendable determination, pushing La Salle to the limit in each set. Irah Jaboneta spearheaded their offense with a team-high 18 points, while Stephanie Bustrillo added 16 points. However, their valiant effort wasn't enough to overcome La Salle's overall team performance.

With their playoff spot confirmed, La Salle will set their sights on extending their winning streak. Their next challenge comes on Tuesday against the University of the East at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

Meanwhile, UP will look to bounce back from this loss when they face the University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday.
