The Philippine men's basketball team displayed resilience against Thailand, clinching an 87-72 triumph in the 19th Asian Games.

In a tightly contested first half, Gilas Pilipinas maintained a slim lead of 41-35, only to explode in the third quarter, extending their advantage to 68-47 thanks to a June Mar Fajardo basket.

However, Thailand mounted a remarkable comeback effort in the final period, embarking on a 13-0 run to reduce the deficit to just five points at 68-63. It took nearly four minutes for the Philippines to break their scoring dry spell, with Ange Kouame contributing a crucial basket.

Tyler Lamb and Freddie Lish led Thailand's spirited rally, narrowing the gap further to 68-63. Despite struggling with their shooting efficiency, the Philippine team managed to hold on to their lead.

Justin Brownlee, who endured a tough first half shooting performance at 3-of-15, found his offensive rhythm in the second half, ultimately recording 22 points and 15 rebounds. CJ Perez added 16 points, although he had some missed opportunities.

The victory secured the Philippines' qualification for the next phase of the tournament, and they have a chance to secure direct entry to the quarterfinals by winning their final Group C match against Jordan.

Preview: Philippines vs. Thailand

Gilas Pilipinas will square off against Thailand in their second match of the 19th Asian Games, and the stakes are high as both teams seek to secure a spot in the knockout quarterfinals.

After an impressive 89-61 victory over Bahrain in their tournament opener, Gilas Pilipinas aims to build on their momentum.

Under the guidance of coach Tim Cone, the Filipino squad made a resounding debut in the 5x5 competition, dominating the Wayne Chism-led Bahrain squad. The 28-point victory showcased their potential and ignited hopes of a strong campaign in the Asian Games.

However, the road ahead won't be easy, as they face a resilient Thailand team led by former UCLA Bruin Tyler Lamb. Thailand is determined to bounce back after suffering a 97-63 defeat at the hands of Jordan.

The history between these Southeast Asian rivals adds another layer of excitement to the matchup. In their last encounter during the 2022 SEA Games in Vietnam, the Philippines had to stage a comeback from a 10-point deficit to narrowly defeat Thailand, 76-73, in the group stage.
