In a stunning opening game for NCAA Season 99, the JRU Heavy Bombers delivered a remarkable performance, toppling the three-time defending champions, the Letran Knights, in an exhilarating 85-79 overtime thriller.
Agem Miranda emerged as the hero for JRU during crunch time, delivering a remarkable performance with 17 crucial points. He shot 7-of-17 from the field and showcased his composure at the free-throw line with a 3-of-4 clip.
Marwin Dionsio also played a pivotal role, matching Miranda's 17 points and making some clutch baskets during the overtime period. Additionally, Shawn Argente contributed 12 points to the team's impressive victory.
The Heavy Bombers faced adversity as they trailed by as much as 10 points in the fourth quarter. However, they displayed resilience and determination, staging a late comeback in regulation. This comeback was ignited by a critical 3-pointer from rookie Shawn Argente and a long two-pointer by Marwin Dionisio.
Letran's Vince Cuajao forced overtime with a clutch three-pointer, but the Knights couldn't keep up with the Heavy Bombers' shooting during the extra period. JRU displayed remarkable teamwork and execution, securing their victory in overtime.
Despite the loss, Kurt Reyson of Letran gave a standout performance, leading the game with a remarkable 18 points. However, he faced challenges with a 3-of-14 shooting from the field and 7 turnovers. Reyson primarily relied on free throws, making 10-of-11 attempts.
Kevin Santos provided one of the few positive aspects for Letran, tallying 16 points on efficient 6-of-8 shooting. He also contributed 9 rebounds and 2 steals to his team's effort.
Letran aims for redemption in their upcoming matchup against Lyceum on Wednesday, seeking to bounce back from their season-opening loss. Meanwhile, JRU looks to continue their winning ways and secure a 2-0 win-loss record when they face Benilde on Friday.
