Akari revives semifinal hopes with dominant sweep of Galeries Tower

The Akari Chargers kept their flickering playoff hopes alive in the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference after a convincing straight-set victory over the Galeries Tower Highrisers, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20, on Saturday at the City of Santa Rosa Multi-Purpose Complex.


The win proved pivotal for Akari as they remained steadfast in their pursuit of a semifinal berth, propelling themselves closer to their goal by eliminating Galeries Tower from contention.

Leading the charge for Akari was Dindin Santiago-Manabat, who showcased her scoring prowess with an impressive 16-point performance, comprising 13 powerful attacks, two crucial blocks, and an ace. Grethcel Soltones contributed significantly with an all-around effort, registering 12 points along with 10 excellent digs and five receptions.

Fifi Sharma delivered a formidable defensive display with 10 points, including four vital kill blocks, while Ezra Madrigal, stepping in admirably for Domingo, added nine points to the tally.

Meanwhile, Michelle Cobb's stellar performance earned her the title of the game's best player, as she orchestrated Akari's offense with 18 excellent sets. Providing crucial support was Bang Pineda, who demonstrated exceptional defensive skills with 16 excellent digs.

With this victory, Akari solidified their position in the team standings, improving to a 3-5 win-loss record, securing the seventh spot and keeping their semifinal hopes alive. Conversely, Galeries Tower's aspirations for a Final Four berth were dashed as they dropped to a 2-6 standing following their sixth defeat in eight games.


Looking ahead, Akari is set to face off against Capital1 on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at the Philsports Arena, aiming to further bolster their position in the league. Meanwhile, Galeries Tower will seek redemption as they take on Farm Fresh on Saturday, 2:00 p.m. at the same venue.
